Is India’s 3rd Largest World GDP status worth celebrating?

Recently our government went into an euphoria as India’s GDP surpassed that of the United Kingdom and became the worlds third largest GDP.

But is this status worth celebrating?

Are we comparing apples and oranges?

From the graph below, it is abundantly clear that our GDP is high only because we are a very large country having a huge population. The key metric, that of per capita income / GDP of UK stands at 44,000+ US Dollars, whereas India’s stands at less than 2000 US Dollars.

India’s Per Capita GDP stands at a dismal 1900 US Dollars, just slightly better than Kenya.

It is a shame that we even compare ourselves with other nations who are much more prosperous than us by all standards.

But such is the state of India’s media that it just can’t raise any voice against this dumbing down of the citizens of the country. Large headlines scream at India surpassing UK with none pointing out that we are not even close to the prosperity that country has.

I am a veteran from the Information Technology industry. Having started my career in 1985 with a company that later became Aptech, I have virtually seen the whole industry evolve from scratch. I became an activist in 2001 after the dot.com bust in 2000. Banking, Finance, Credit Cards, Personal Loans and by extension economy and how money flows in the world are my areas of interest. These are the things that affect everyone, irrespective of their caste, creed, color, race, religion or nationality.

One of the most fascinating thing is how humans have created money and use it as a tool to subjugate others and how we, the common folks, suffer from this man made malaise.

I write about these things and try to separate the wheat from the chaff.
